Beginners Collagraph Printmaking - and again Sat 7th and Sat 14th July.

Sun 4th Feb 2018 - 10 - 3
Sun 11th Feb 2108 - 10- 4
£100 for the two sessions
Tutor is Genny Lavers

In this two-part workshop Genny will demonstrate this intaglio method of printmaking, which never fails to produce striking results from such simple materials!  In the first session you will build a minimum of three collagraph plates using mount board and a variety of different materials to create interesting textures and tones.  Your first plate will feature mainly collaged materials which showcase a variety of textures, then on your second plate you will explore the idea of creating tonal contrasts, and for your third plate you will focus on techniques for mark-making.  If time permits you can compose a fourth plate which combines all these elements together.  Genny will varnish your plates after the first session, ready for the second session when you will be inking up your plates and using the intaglio printing press.  The intaglio technique is a very physical process which involves working ink into the plates using rough cloth and polishing it off to leave ink in the crevices.  You will be using oil-based etching ink, so we provide rubber gloves to protect your hands.  The pressure from the roller on the press squeezes the ink from the crevices onto the paper.  It is so exciting to peel the paper off the collage plate and see the results – prepare to get hooked on collagraph printmaking! Genny will bring along examples of her collagraph prints along with the collage plates they were printed from, as well as some supplementary images, to inspire and guide you as you familiarise yourself with the techniques.

Please wear old clothes – intaglio ink does not wash out. Ideally bring along an oversized man’s shirt.

To finish you may like to add a soft feather, small beads or set semi-precious stones into a selected area.

Suitable for all, no previous experience is necessary.
